Beyondie Sulphate of Potash Project (Investment Decision February 2019)
Development of the Beyondie Sulphate of Potash Project involving the production of Sulphate of Potash (SOP) a high yield, premium fertiliser with initial production of 90ktpa SOP plus supporting infrastructure comprising a 78 kilometre gas pipeline, a gas-fired power station, access road, communication facilities, an airstrip and an accommodation village.
Kalium Lakes is an Australian, publicly listed exploration and development company, focused on developing the Beyondie SOP Project in Western Australia with the aim of producing SOP for both domestic and international markets. SOP is used to cultivate fruits, vegetables, berries, potatoes, beans, cocoa, tobacco and tree nuts.
The Project will result in Kalium Lakes becoming one of Australia’s first SOP producers, supporting the creation of a new domestic industry as there is currently no SOP production in Australia.
Key commitments
- Developing the existing strong relationship with local Traditional Owners groups, the Gingirana and Birriliburu peoples.
- Proactive identification and support of candidates for employment opportunities including preferential employment approach for the Gingirana and Birriliburu peoples.
- Training and support to improve employee retention and career progression including a skills and capability register, support for literacy, numeracy and vocational skills training and developing a culturally appropriate workplace.
- Promotion of procurement opportunities and supporting Indigenous business capacity building.
Community Engagement
- Establishment of Gingirana and Birriliburu Relationship Committees with regular ongoing engagement to discuss project opportunities in education, training, employment, procurement, cultural heritage and social development.
- Appointment of two Gingirana Liaison Officers and two Birriliburu Liaison Officers
- Appointment of an Aboriginal Engagement Officer to lead engagement around training and employment opportunities.
- Hosting ‘’Welcome to Country event” and other events to recognise and promote culture
- Cultural Awareness Training to be developed and delivered by the Gingirana and Birriliburu peoples.
Supporting stronger communities
- Opportunity to supply goods and services including through list of preferred Indigenous suppliers.
- Indigenous contracting obligations required through procurement process and linking of Indigenous businesses with existing contractors.
- Ongoing effective delivery of Cultural Heritage Management Plans in partnership with the Gingirana and Birriliburu peoples.
- Future consideration of transfer of buildings, plants and other assets no longer required, to the Gingirana and Birriliburu peoples.
- At mine closure, installation of water pumps providing for potable water for Birriliburu Peoples on country.
